From New Beginnings to New Homes

I came to the United States in December 1990 with a simple plan: three months to study English, then back home to South Korea. By the second month, that plan had changed. I decided to stay and build my education here instead.

That decision took me from Fresno, California, to Virginia, and eventually to New York City, where I built a career as an ESL teacher — helping students navigate a new language and a new country, much like I once had to. When my first child was born 24 years ago, I stepped back from teaching to raise my family. Two more children followed, and for over a decade, being a mom was my full-time work. When my youngest started kindergarten thirteen years ago, I found my way to real estate — and quickly realized how much it had in common with teaching. Both are about listening closely, meeting people where they are, and guiding them through something unfamiliar and important.

Early in my career, I used to feel nervous before every call with a potential buyer or seller. A mentor gave me a piece of advice that changed everything: stop thinking of them as clients — think of them as your aunt, your uncle, your grandmother, your grandfather. Once I made that shift, the nerves disappeared. What replaced them was something better: genuine care for each person’s well-being, not just their transaction. That’s still how I approach every relationship today.

My journey has taken me from South Korea to classrooms, motherhood, and ultimately real estate. Every chapter has taught me something valuable about listening, serving, and helping others move forward with confidence. Over the years, Valley Stream has become much more than the community where I work—it has become home.

I believe a strong community is built on relationships, trust, and neighbors who genuinely care about one another. That’s why I’ve remained actively involved in the Village of Valley Stream and the surrounding community beyond my work in real estate.

It has been an incredible honor to be recognized as the Valley Stream Herald’s Person of the Year in 2023 and Business Person of the Year by the Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce. Those recognitions mean so much to me because they reflect the community that has welcomed my family and allowed me to build both my life and my career here.
